    Description

Absolutely stunning hand-carved limestone Prairie School doorway header (circa 1907) salvaged from a Chicago Greystone on Grand Blvd (now MLK Drive) in the early nineties.
This massive piece of Chicago history was most likely produced
by George Grant Elmslie (chief ornamental draftsman for Louis Sullivan and architect in his own right).
The actual execution was most probably carried out by Elmslie’s carving artisan Kristian Schneider.
One hundred years of Chicago winters have enacted some spalling of the limestone along the bottom edge (pictured) of the limestone framing the ornamentation…but otherwise the carving itself is remarkable and in very good condition.
